Friday and Saturday
Aft submission v tired.wen to 2d lab to do. Created a new rocky background.
Sat-
Many of us went back to school today to try to complete our work and give each other suggestions. We had set targets to complete a certain amount of scenes but wasn’t able to. I hope all can be completed.
I tried shortening the story with opinions from Kezia and Yi chuin too. But my newest idea with their significant contribution is to show that the penguins were collecting a small fish pile and after that, the penguin walks closer to the stone and he throws down he fish too. But when he does that, the other penguins got a shock looking at the comparisons.
Discussed with chuin n kex hw to shorten
Discussed colours wif chuin n vv 4 rocks
Thursday
There is a submission for character desugn tomorrow and thus we had to stop P3 for a day to focus. Today will be a sleepless night again and we hope all goes well tomorrow! Had to focus on character design.
tues
In school today, I created a short turn for the starting shots and animated the walk. I am going to start drawing the rocky background for the other penguins to come on. I am thinking of shotening the storyboards.
Friday
Today, I came uo with the finalised penguin in flash and tested the line quality in blue or black outline. Black outline works fine.
However, I met with a problem where my background design is pixilated and thus, next time I should work in a higher resolution and double e size n re import so that it will affect less.
Production
Thursday
I also decided to work with flash and I have edited storyboards. However,I treied to cut short many frames as I am really short of time, but Amanda advised me that the net scene has to stay because it makes the flow clearer, and I added more scenes in. eg e guy catching e penguin.
Wed
Greg also commented that my frame non the penguins looking upwards is too straight and dosen not look like its looking at the right direction which I agree with. Kezia gave me great ideas on making my scene more humorous by showing the wild penguins collecting fish, and there was even a pile, but yet, it’s still smaller than e big fish the penguin brought from town.I thought that was funny. And as for the truck part, instead of both penguins behind the truck, they commented that I could use one scene of the penguin in front of the vehicle and the other behind to show boarding n alighting.
Amanda and Yichuin also suggested changing the shop to a open one instead and it ends with a shock on the fish monger’s face and the penguin and truck owner looks at each other when at the truck scene to show more interaction.
As for the ending, to make it clearer when the ending scene pans up to sky, the END word should come in there.
Thanks everyone for your valuable comments, I am trying my best to make the changes.
Tues
Rachael’s had funny and cute characters. I thought Shu xian’s chicken is really cute and had nice stylizing, but don’t be over stressed!
Mon 1 june
After class, Yichuin came over my place to stay to motivate each other, however, as we did not sleep the night before, we could barely stay awake to do work. I asked for Yi chuin’s opinions too and she mentioned that my animation piece has no purpose and was also a bit draggy. I agree as I had been told by Alan my work has always been too epic too. This is bad as I have really got to be more realistic and learn how to tell a effective visual stpry in the given time frame.
I saw some others’ work too and it turned out well with nice audio. Audio really plays a big part. Some animated pieces left a deeper impact on me.
30,31 may Sun
28 may fri
As to how my characters are going to blend in with the environment, I need to experiment and test it out as proof of concept with the character inside.
27 may thurs
One proble is that the shops maybe too empty, but I’m afraid too much details may cause distractions. I thought of a lineless background style too.
26may Tuesday
I have decided on my wonky style and experimented some backgrounds for my shop with reference to the Flintstones’ wonky style too. I was thinking of having a flat 2D style also.
Today, I had a headache and stayed home to do up my finalized background. I had an idea of putting the different styles of penguins I had though of before in my sketch book together to be shown in the animation. I have tried out the watercolour brush strokes style too, but I’m not really good at it as it turned out that the colours I mixed gets too dirty or too uneven and does not have that relaxed strokes in the way I wanted it to be.
I will consult Amanda tomorrow to ask for her opinions.
24 may sun
Amanda encouraged me to use my disadvantages of not being able to draw to my advantage. I designed some wonky houses when I got home, hope it works. I have realized that background designs have a lot to take into consideration too. We have to know the atmosphere and add the colours accordingly, whether the style is a hard or the soft type, add elements that engage with tha characters, for example, my fish shop has a large fish at the top of it for the end and also know how much details to add so that there will be a balance between the character and the environment. There is also a Last but not least, there is also a play of angles.
21may Thursday
I am stuck. I consulted Amanda again today and she showed me a watercolor paint style which I’m really comfortable with as I like soft pastel colors. Amanda was very nice and lent me a few books on the various styles I can try on. They had warped perspectives too which Amanda said I could try on too. There were some textured on pictures which gave a really different feel to it which Amanda said I could try out and also a book on the collages if I wanted to do a paper cut out style.
Books:
From a distance
The day I swapped m father for two goldfish
The city at the bay- warped perspective
I was rather inspired at the end of the consultation though Amanda encouraged me to do a normal animation to boost up my confidence and to train myself for FYP too, thus, I have decided to overcome my fears and try the more traditional animating methods.
Tues19 may
I showed my revised storyboards to Amanda during lesson today and she was glad and felt that there was an improvement in the clarity of my visuals too. She explained that I needed to have tighter shots to show more feelings and depth with the audiences and that my penguin size in comparison to the human was too big, and size comparisons is a very important point I have always got to take into account to.
Also the scene where the penguin collects the fish from the owner has to be shorten and tightened to closer scenes so that the audiences can feel more for the character. I never thought of that before and, but now I realized. Also, if I wanted to create a kidnapping scene, there had to be more anticipation and mystery before the penguin colony and animal activist is revealed. This will give my animation a better flow with more feelings and a little humor added. Amanda even suggested I can show the penguins competing as to who can get the biggest fish with one penguin diving it and getting a small fish and another getting an even bigger one but are all stunned when the penguin that just arrived has a really large fish even without having to fish. That is a really nice idea and I will try to incorporate it into my story, just that I am a little stuck for now. We talked about the style of the drawings too and I showed Amanda a B/W Victorian style I created for the animation piece. Now I am thinking of whether to make it into a motion graphics, or a paper cut styled animated piece too. Amanda encouraged me to experiment but I have to go for the one which is less time consuming as I am running out of time already.
May 18- mon
Amanda took over us for the second part of the journey for P3 and she helped me look through the storyboards to see what could be done to salvage the story. The same comment I got was that she was unable to understand story too due to a shortage of panels which, although was what Alan mentioned to me too only goes to show that it is a obvious mistake that I had to rectify.
Amanda also pointed out the frames in which my 180 degree rule had been broken and that my ending had been too abrupt. She asked me to redo my storyboards and show it to her tomorrow.
May 15-presentation
Presetation was not very good today too. And I am really guilty, but up to now, I am a little lost on the story telling which I am really weak in.
The comments I got regarding the errors we had were the poor visual storytelling as many could not understand my story though they tried very hard which made it worse. There were a lack of frames which played a part in contributing to the poor flow. My audio had to be improved too and one comment that Alan made had me thinking was that my audience were not able to feel for my character, and if so, they will not feel involved with my story and that will result in my animated piece being less memorable. One way Alan suggested I could improve it was to make show the character thinking which could help connect with our minds.
It seems I have a long way more to go.
May 14
The fast few, Kezia , Jarrold, Tri, Naf and Andreas, Gina Germaine, and Rachael presented today and their worked looks really good. I’m really proud of them and am a little envious of them too. They are amazing!
I can remember each specialty of the their animations and that’s really good as it shows that they all have something unique of their own which will help leave an impact on others. For Kez, I think her fat man character is really cute and her overall style looks rather professional. Jarrold’s baby pop sound stayed in my head and it should be a rather amusing piece. Tri’s forest background captures my attention somehow and it still stays in my head and I can picture it in my head quite well somehow though my memory has never been this good. I like her character clothe design too. Andreas smelly stink is the thing that jumps up most clearly at me whenever I think of his piece and I can still smell it’s stink now.Germaine’s lightning story brings out the humor really well and its simple and neat style makes it a comfortable experience to watch everytime. Gina’s character really gave me the creeps as she looks half dead even when she’s alive. Haha. But it suited her story well as it happened during Halloween. Rachael’s visual story telling is quite good too and I like the way her characters are designed and its funny everytime I think about the little old man talking to his tree. I hope mine has a unique point to it too and I can learn from all of them on how they made an effective story.

What I liked about the show was the contrast they had between the characters and the environment, with the characters looking very stylized, and it brings out the charm of them both.
There was also a mix of traditional illustration in it too and now I know, there are endless possibilities out there and we should never limit ourselves to just one. For all has its own strengths and it can even help bring out a variation of moods for your animated piece.
I am thankful to be able to catch the show.
Friday 8 May
Friday was consultation today and I was busying copying down notes into my sketchbook. I have leant some useful tips from the book.
Let me list out some for you.
1.Your initial storyboard should never be the final. As you move on, there will be certain changes so we shouldn’t love our boards to much and be prepared that some of our ideas will be thrown out totally and lastly we have to keep an open mind for ideas to develop a good storyboard.
2.Beat sheet
We should have a beat sheet to list out all the shots before we start so we can see the skeleton of the story flow.
Eg.
1. A boy walks to the window.
1. 2.There is a cat outside the window.
2. 3.The boy smiles
3. Shot list
After that, we add the shot sizes.
Eg.
1. A boy walks to the window. WS
1. 2.There is a cat outside the window.MS
2. 3.The boy smiles. MCU
After all these are planned out, one can start drawing out the storyboards to see the story flow visually and how we can improve to make it more interesting and suitable for the story.
That is all so far. Hope it helps! (:
6 May Tuesday
The Gantt chart has to list out specifically all the details of the dates and every aspect of the process be listed down. Some include the audio, the scenes, colouring, compilation, editing and much more.
These helps us to view the whole process more realistically and also helps you be more organized in your time management.
Alan also explained to us that breaking down our animation scenes will help in the long run. By breaking down, we can see the scenes that are harder or simpler and we should start from the simple scenes first so as to boost our confidence to continue on. This way, a clearer image of how the animation should look will also be revealed. From there, we move onto the hardest scene as the start and ending scene leaves the most impact on the viewers and so a good job should come out of it just in case we run out of time or if we die down in the later part.
Throughout the story, the visuals should be able to convey the message, and this should not be limited by the scenes itself so that if the clients were to ask for a change, the story should still be able to tell what it had initially wanted to.
This is a very realistic and useful tip I have never thought of before, I guess I have to make a lot of changes to my storyboards.
That’s all for today. I will be having my next consultation on Friday.
4 may
At the start of the lesson, Alan wanted us to submit our learning contracts before class began and he showed us stop motion of Wallace and Gromit. It was really entertaining.
However, the main purpose of showing us the animations were for us students to analyze the storytelling of the animated film. The planning of the angles, shot sizes and precise timing play a huge role in creating a smooth flow which helps the audience understand the story and be able to feel for and catch the humor as shown in the film. Thus, to be able to achieve these, you need to be very precise in your planning and that’s where the storyboards come into play. Each music and shot conveys a certain emotion sends a different message to its audiences.
Thus, the first step to a successful animation lies in the storyboarding, as a mere mistake due to poor planning can be disastrous. Hope I am able to go somewhere close.
Through the films, there were some useful pointers I learnt in character design too. The creators quoted that to give your characters a personality, it has to be built up well and does not have to be too extravagant or straight in your face. For example, to show a mysterious penguin, the creator gave the character a look without emotions and sleek body movements to go with it to show it’s mysteriousness and he behaves in this way so as not to give away anything.
At this point, I realized that the creators have given a mindset unique to each of his characters. As for the Main character who is gullible and naïve, shows all his emotions blatantly and acts more clumsily. I am amazed that so many thoughts can be portrayed from such short timeframe.
We had an enjoyable time and received many useful tips too. After that, I had to present my new idea to the class to see if they buy the story. Not everyone was convinced, especially Mr. Alan, though I am thankful for the chance given and apologize for taking up everyone’s time.
I am still rushing my storyboards and learning contract now, but I really hope I can manage to convince everyone of my new story.
I shall continue my work now. That’s all for today. (:
30 April
Some useful feedback I gained was that the way I told my story is too long and is unable to fit the given time frame. I should learn how to spot the gist of the story better. I have been bad at summary since Secondary school.
Thus, due to my inability to spot the gist well, and too many things are cluttered together, there is no focus and the scenarios jump from one to another, thus, it confuses the audiences.
My comedy parts have also failed. Aha. I thought of the kangaroo grabbing the Old man’s wife in urgency, but Mr Alan pointed out that it does not make sense. I should think twice before doing what I do the next time.
In summary, he gave me advice on improving and shortening the story, which was to make it a news report style and take out parts that are not important, like the mother kangaroo died, the family adopted the baby and also that he frequently visits them.
I appreciate these advices, but somehow I still feel rather stifled by it.
I really feel like changing my story as I am stressed out by it. I like it as a piece of interesting news, but not as much as a animated short film as I think it’s too serious, with the Old man being knocked unconscious and the wife and all having to save him. It’s just a personal opinion. (: I would prefer a story with a more unusual storyline to it.
I am looking, I found a story about a Rhinoceros who though it was a dog and followed his playmates running around outside the house which scared away some visitors and also spoilt a bed he tried to sleep on when he saw the dogs doing so previously. It is really adorable, and here’s the link if you all are interested to take a look at. (:
Here’s the link: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-417111/The-extraordinary-story-Rupert-rhino.html
I am still thinking about it. But its pretty sad as the rhino died at the end due to pneumonia when he was released back into the wild as he got too big for his owners. ):
29 April
I can still remember the day when we presented our ideas; many of my classmates’ ideas were not really approved as it was not a fully developed story yet, but just a scenario. Many would have though I am really lucky to have found one which has the full flow of story. I agree, but somehow, the story seems to act as a template I have to follow no matter and I get very frustrated by not being able to move out of it but to follow accordingly and it gets boring. What’s worse is that I do not know how to pick out the gist of the story.
I am worried for my presentation, mine will be tomorrow. I am sure comments will be bad, but for now, I am really lost.
Seeing my classmates’ presentations today were really encouraging, they did really great work and I can even see the final coming out of it already, can’t wait. I especially thought the way Rachael told her story and how she designed it is really fantastic! It is humorous, appealing, straight to the point and unique.
I have learnt that, we should design our characters according to their personality too and improvise with that point. For example, my story was an old man who adopted a kangaroo and I simply designed a fat old man with a fat belly, some of my friends told me he looked cute, that was really sweet of them. But thinking back, I realized that its not enough, I should have stylized it more and give clues about the characters and the things they will do and behave through their character design, this way, it also makes it more unique.
There is so much I have to change and do, but the timeframe now is too short! I really have to train myself to be better as if my course mates can do it, there’s no excuse for me.
Anyway, TY’s created her story in a very visually appealing way. I am amazed by her that even though the story can be rather disturbing as the performer is eaten up by a animals, she can make it out to be so harmless and entertaining. And just looking at her storyboards, even without the colours, I can already imagine the vibrancy and excitement of the whole scenario. Somehow, I think it is pretty amazing for I can even picture myself in the scenario itself as one of the audiences. I am still unable to grasp how they manage to do it, is it a play of good character design, the angles, or perhaps the story flow. I know, it must be a combination of all, but where do I start from? Sigh.
And Vivien’s character design has turned out pretty well as compared to before, but still there is room for improvement. You all have done well. (:
There were two talks for us today too. I really appreciate having these opportunities although I am really unsure if I want to continue in this line after I graduate. These talks are motivational as all these successful people are from Singapore too, and they are very normal people like us, just that they had a passion and never gave up. It helps to think that though Singapore is not very recognized, if you want it hard enough, you can reach it.(:
28 April
I though the story was really complicated at times and I cannot get it very clearly, but overall, I think it have potential in it since Andreas is very good with his sense of humor too.
However, there was quite a lot of stuff he wanted to squeeze in his animation and that was a problem he had to overcome. Truthfully, I am facing the same problems as him and I really have problems shortening it. Fortunately, Mr Alan had helped him with the advice that he should just focus on a particular one. I guess I should try to do that too.
Next, it was Kala’s consultation and I thought her story is really interesting, about a guy who shipped himself in a parcel to his Mother. That is really so animated itself. Haha. However, initially, I thought that the main focus will be on the guy who shipped himself, yet, Mr. Alan told us the audiences should be able to sympathize with the delivery man more. I didn’t get it at first till he explained and there was also so much humor packed into it when he said his version in the delivery man’s difficulty delivering the parcel. Guess I should widen my thinking scope and see more possibilities as I tend to get very rigid with a certain fixed concept from when I see it.
These are the main two I could remember, as for Gregory’s it couldn’t really get into my mind visually as I’m not really keen on sports, moreover, there is foul play with gunshots, hmm, or perhaps that violence will not really show in the animation. But many people are pretty excited over the teams and there’s much excitement in their eyes. This, had also let me see more clearly how a person can identify with your given topic can affect so much, with my lecturer and course mates getting all hyped up over it and me not feeling much.
No matter what, I have a really bad feeling about my work, I still have got no idea how to go about it. Hope it will eventually go well.(:

Day 3- Friday 24 April
I was actually not very sure if I should embark on this story as it involves a lot of drawing and people drawings, but my drawing is really weak.
However, after voicing out my worries, Alan explained to me that I could stylize it into my own way so that it can be achieved. And through this, it should help me boost my confidence for FYP. This i very motivating.
“You should not change your story because you feel you are unable to execute it, but try to overcome it in different ways, in the most creative ones you can think of that are achievable within your means.”“ When you feel weak, you can list that out in your learning contract as of your learning objectives, to make a smooth animation.” Alan commented, and also “ It’s the how you tell your story, not how well your drawing is.” These are some things he said to me, not the exact quotes, but the meanings are there.
It was really encouraging upon hearing these words. Although we all heard of these before, but somehow when you hear it coming personally to you from your lecturer, it feels more assuring and that someone still believes you can make it even though you know you are not up to it and sincerely wants to help you.
Thus, I would like to say to all my course mates, don’t feel disheartened and discouraged when you feel weak, show what you can do to the world in ways most unique yourself.
Hope the quotes in this posts can help you guys out when you feel discouraged, and lastly, don’t give up no matter what, and thank you Mr. Alan.(:
Monday, April 27, 2009
Oh no, I just typed a long post for today and when I clicked submit, they said I was not signed in and everything was gone. Everyone, please remember to save save save! But its ok, I will try again... so here goes. (calming down) (:
Today was consultation day for Groups 1,3 and 5. My turn will come tomorrow as I am in group 4.
Thus, I met up with Vivien and we discussed amongst ourselves our character design and helped each other out. Drawing together, I am able to see how others stylise their drawings in a way very much different from the way I work. Vivien gave me tips on drawing my characters according to measurements so that my character will look more accurate in different angles.
I had given my charcter with a more stylised look and a simplified drawing style.
We also discussed Vivien's animation as she was facing difficulties coming up with her finalised character. What I realised was her problem was that she tries very hard to folow as closely as possible to her chosen character in real life, and by doing so, there is not much space for developement and her character looks very realistic. It was always a pleasure seeing these beautiful drawings.
There is no harm in having a realistic drawing style, however as she had other cartoony characters in it too, and the characters looked very different in terms of their styles, as though they came from different animations and thus did not fit in very well. Also with the given timeframe, I fear that there will not be sufficient time forher to animate and it will be a challenge trying to keep the consistency with all the details in her character.
Thus, with abit of persuation and exploration from diferent sources, we were able to come up with a character that had more personality to it and was easier for her to handle.I really hope our discussion today helped her.
During our lunch break, I saw the old man from the drinks stall working, upon closer observation, he had interesting features to him with his spectacle sliding down to his nose revealing his tiny eyes and drooping cheeks which gave him a personality of his own and I wanted to take a snapshot of him to use as reference to my character design. After that, I went to the Muslim stall to buy food, and the Uncle donned in a white cap also looked very interesting with a white beard and friendly look.
Suddenly, everywhere I looked I was thinking of my charcter design. I guess I was slowly getting closer with my animation. Thus, I went after class and asked the Uncle from the drink stall if I could snap a shot of him, he was really embarassed about it and took some persuasion before finally allowing me to take his picture, and his whole family got excited about him, commenting he will be a new star. It was a rather amusing expereince. But also, I got rather embarrassed by it all too and didn't have the courage to ask the Muslim shop Uncle anymore.
I guess, these are all part of being an animator and I hope I'm on the right track.
Initially, I was feeling rather demoralised with Project 3 as my skills are very limited.
Today,I showed my character designs to Vivien, TY and Yichuin too and they gave me helped me with valuable feedback and advice which I really cherish. Thus, I hope to push myself further for this animation project as my way of saying thanks for the encouragement they have given me.
Goodluck to you all too and don't give up!

Day 3-23April
When you start embarking on these questions, you start to really think in depth on how your story really goes, the message you want to bring across to your audience, your execution and objectives.
I stat to realise that what I thought I already knew was actually not enough. The questions really help you go along way, and thus, they have to be answered with lots of thought and brain power.
I hope what I came up with is of substance. So, here goes.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
Brief Storyline:
A young Kangaroo adopted by a family 10 years ago saves the owner one day when he was struck unconscious by a fallen tree in a storm by alerting his wife.
Full Story:
A farmer who suffered serious head injuries after being struck by a falling tree branch was rescued by a partially blind kangaroo who is being hailed as a hero.
Lulu the kangaroo banged on the door of the family's home in Morwell, Gippsland in southeast Australia after discovering the farmer lying unconscious in a field.
According to Rural Ambulance Victoria paramedic Eddie Wright, the man had been checking his property for damage following a severe storm when he was struck by the branch.
Wright said that if Len Richards' family had not found him so quickly, he might have died.
"The kangaroo alerted them to where he was and went and sat down next to him, and that's how they found him," he said.
Richards was taken to an Austin hospital.
Richards' daughter Celeste said, "Lulu and Dad are very close and she follows him around, but we all just love her so much."
About ten years ago, the family found Lulu in the pouch of her mother who had been killed by a car. The authorities allowed them to care for Lulu and adopt her because she is missing one eye.
The Australian Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has urged the family to nominate Lulu for its National Bravery Award.
"From my point of view, it's a darn good story, and I would hope Lulu is nominated," said RSCPA president Dr. Hugh Wirth.

I will be working on the learning contract.(:
Thank you for your time.
Day 2-22 April
We had fun listening to everyone’s stories.
During presentation, most of us had a hard time remembering exactly the flow of each story, furthermore, there are three to retell and it was quite a challenge.
Initially, I though the session was just to share our finds with the class and widen our horizon. I assumed that what we will be learning from this experience is how each individual views the definition of weird in the stories they presented.
What I didn’t realise about till our lecturer mentioned was that with each retelling of the story, one can see the factors that left an impression on the listeners. Through this, I can also see how differently others view stories and events as compared to my own viewpoint all along. I can have a better grasp to the events in which are more crucial in bringing out the story.
At the end of the sharing session, I gained another important experience from sharing. That is the reaction of a large group of listeners. I am able to see how others receive my story and compare to the reaction I want, whether it tallies and make adjustments accordingly.
Lesson was quite enjoyable today and I particularly remembered two stories which I feel are very disturbing. One was a girl hanging herself on the tree during Halloween and people though it was a prop. Another was the 72 years old woman who was pregnant with a dead foetus for 60 years.
Remembering these stories help me see my own viewpoint from my classmates when I recall back and retell the story in my blog and I believe some of these concepts will come in handy in brainstorming sessions in the future.
Day 1-21st april
Today was the start of Project 3. We got into little groups and Alan passed us groups a weird story each to brainstorm the approach as to whether a video or an animation piece will best bring out the story.
Thereafter we were given a set of questionnaire to help us determine the possible scenarios in which we will have to take note of that will in turn affect our animation.
There were questions like spotting our target audiences, the kind of reaction we are going for and the important factors such as sounds and events that makes up the animation.
Everything had to be taken into consideration to create the animation. We had to show all our results later on and show how we are going to portray the above questions and incorporate it visually into our animations.
I was amazed by the scope of the areas we have to consider when we first saw the paper as there were many new points mentioned that I never really cared about in the past or saw the importance of it. For instance, I always though having a target audience does not really matter as I hoped the animations I create can be for a wide group regardless of the young and old. But through the exercises and explanation from the lecturer, I came to realise that this decision is very important and marks the direction of the style and in many ways makes the decision to sticky matters one will come across from time to time.
I never really thought of the reaction I would want from the audiences too. Knowing it now, I plan my events according to the reaction I would like and it just makes the whole story idea more interesting.
Today’s lesson was a valuable experience. Although I was quiet, many thoughts were flowing through my head. And I appreciate these learning processes.
Tomorrow, we will have to come up with a few weird stories and apply these steps. I look forward to applying these questions to my new found weird story.
